Children's Eye Exams

A child’s vision and eye health can be assessed from birth. All the information we require to detect eye disease and prescribe glasses can be determined without any response from the child.

We recommend all children have a full eye exam starting at 3 years old. This is important even if everything appears normal, as our visual system is fully developed by about 8 years of age. Early treatment of any vision or eye muscle issues provides better visual outcomes later in life.

A Children’s Eye Exam includes, but is not limited to:

Discussion of any concerns the child, parent or teachers may have regarding vision or eye health. Discussion of any health conditions, medications, developmental concerns or relevant family history.
Assessment of distance and near vision and prescription of any necessary visual aids (glasses, contact lenses, sunglasses). Methods: retinoscopy (no response required), auto-refraction (no response required), shape matching (ages 3-5), reading letters and numbers (ages 6+).
Assessment of binocular vision system: testing of eye movements, alignment, convergence and 3D vision.
Assessment of colour vision.
Full assessment of ocular health including all anterior and posterior eye structures (imaging may be required).
