Spring and summer in the northeast are notorious for HAYFEVER!
It’s a time of itchy, watery, stinging, red eyes and the urge to give them a good rub is hard to resist. Most of us get by with an antihistamine tablet or some antihistamine eye drops but what else can you do? Here are my five tips for dealing with Hayfever.
- AVOID your allergen – if it’s pollens that you are allergic to, avoid going outside, turn your ceiling fans off and close your windows on high pollen count days.
- The COLD is your friend! Try using an ice pack to take the itch out of your eyes. Rubbing your eyes can weaken your cornea and lead to other visual problems. Eye rubbing is a big NO NO, especially for children!
- When outside try wearing WRAPPY SUNNIES outside to reduce the contact of dust and pollens with your eyes.
- Speak to your optometrist about EYE DROPS that can be prescribed just before the hayfever season and prevent the dreaded itchy and watery eyes before they even begin!
See an ALLERGIST! – They will help to determine exactly what you are allergic to and can organize the Desensitization process. Desensitization can reduce your dependence on hayfever medications and reduce the severity of your hayfever symptoms.
